Sony Pushes 'Green Hornet' Back Two Weeks

So there's been some movement on the summer movies of 2010. Sony has moved its Adam Sandler flick, Grown Ups, from the spring into the summer, planting it firmly on June 25th. It will now square off against

To accommodate Adam Sandler, Sony is bumping his Funny People co-star Seth Rogen and the more-trouble-than-it's-probably-worth Green Hornet to July 9th. Not a bad weekend, but it's a major difference. June 25th was otherwise unoccupied and now Green Hornet will have to fight off Predators and the animated Despicable Me. That's never good news. Who wouldn't want to be the only game in town?

But the news gets worse for Green Hornet. Instead of being ahead of two huge later summer flicks, it's now trapped between Twilight: Eclipse and Christopher Nolan's Inception. Of course, we're a year out, so June 25th could have filled up, too, but if you were grading this move for its strategy, you couldn't give it much more than a C. I mean, at least the studio has a Sandler flick to plug in its place. If it's not a high concept comedy, his movies usually do very well.

But Green Hornet is acting more and more like a troublesome child for Sony. First, director Stephen Chow backed out and we still don't know for sure if he'll play Kato, and then Rogen and the studio latched onto Michel Gondry, who just doesn't feel right for this project. To me, the selection actually smacks of finding a fall guy. This way, if it fails, it's because of Gondry's bizarre treatment of the film.

I just think if Sony had confidence in Green Hornet it wouldn't be thrown to the lions, against two other high profile wide releases and between two of next summer's most anticipated movies.

When The Green Hornet was first announced with Seth Rogan and him trying to get Stephen Chow for Kato, I was excited. A fat funny guy with an Asian funny guy. Now the dude has lost weight and Chow has left as director, it seems maybe they should just end it now.
We have enough comic book type movies and if this one is being taken too seriously (in tone I mean) then screw it. Plus Rogan's movies aren't doing all that well at the box office.

Stephen Chow directing this would have been brilliant. I don't know what the deal was exactly, and I don't think anyone outside of that production has a handle on it for sure, but when the co-star was going to direct and now isn't directing...you're better off cutting him loose completely. I think his Kato would be fantastic, but that's a lot of needless pressure to put on Michel Gondry, dealing with that shit everyday.

Who does it help to keep him involved at this point? I really think Sony's backed into a corner on this one.
