'Vacancy' Director Occupies Rodriguez' 'Predators'

The Robert Rodriguez-produced spit n' polish of Predator has a real nimrod for a director. Yep: Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) has been hired by Rodriguez to head up Predators, which Rodriguez further confirms to Ain't It Cool News will shoot this fall at his Troublemaker Studios in Austin.

Given how much Fox wants this to relaunch the Predator - and a separate Alien franchise is on the way, too, gaining further distance from the really bad AvP series - it might be surprising that the studio gave its approval to Antal, who has never guided a hit in the U.S. Rodriguez sees something in him, however:

"I always loved Kontroll, where he proved himself to be a very resourceful and original filmmaker. When I saw Armored, I could tell he's also great with action and has a keen eye for casting. He reminded me of Quentin with how he was able to work with a group of very strong, singular actor talents and make it look effortless. I know he'll be able to get the most out of what we want to be an outstanding cast. We really want to go with a character driven action movie, because that's what we all remember about the original Predator, and we want to take it even further with this."

It's certainly a big move for Antal and a fairly brave one for Fox, although people probably wouldn't go see Predators because of the guy in the director's chair. Or at least, the profit margin won't be determined by that and that alone.

I liked Vacancy more than a lot of people I know, specifically because of the direction. While there are obvious differences between that film and this one, it showed me that Antal could make exactly the movie he's supposed to make. Can't hurt having a Rodriguez script and substantial amounts of money to work with.
