Denzel, 'Unstoppable' Back on Track

Remember how Fox was tightening the purse strings on Tony Scott's Unstoppable and how it got too tight for Denzel Washington? Well now he's back in the project, roughly two week after he declined to take a pay cut to help make the numbers work.

Apparently, Washington and Scott discussed the project at length while they were both in Europe promoting The Taking of Pelham 123, and in a classic bit of spin, "both parties found ways to be flexible."

I smell a back-end deal brewing. The return of Washington marks the fifth time he and Scott have worked together, although Pelham is probably their least satisfying outing.

With Denzel back in the fold, Unstoppable, a thriller about a train that may or may not be stoppable, will keep its fall production slot. That's excellent news for Fox, which has been developing the project for years, was on its third director, and even locked up Star Trek breakout star Chris Pine to co-lead. Considering this is a potential summer movie for the studio, having all of those pieces still atached is cause for celebration.

The film once had a budget over slightly over $100 million, which was too expensive for Fox, so Scott whittled away to get it closer to $90 million. At that point, Denzel balked at losing a chunk of his $20 million salary. I hope he can tough it out for around $15 million.

It just shows his character to come back... he's not a greedy bastard like half the other film actors....
