Ryan Reynolds on Playing Deadpool and Green Lantern
Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at 8:02AM
As you know, Ryan Reynolds is playing Deadpool and he recently signed on as
The Green Lantern. It's not the first time someone has crossed over from DC to Marvel or vice
versa, but it is by far the biggest move in that regard.

Halle Berry's Storm was not much of a factor in the X-Men movies, and Catwoman didn't
even have DC on board. But that's not on the level with what Reynolds is trying to execute,
and I guess I always thought there would be (or should be) some kind of contractual clause
keeping stars of superhero franchises out of other superhero franchises with the other major
comic book company. Wouldn't Marvel rather not have Reynolds as Green Lantern, or will the
attention that movie generates help Deadpool in the long run?
For his part, Reynolds tells Entertainment Weekly that it's no big deal to him, and in
fact, he may want to play more heroes (like Flash) in the future. "There's no rule that says you
can't play two different characters in two different comic-book universes," Reynolds insisted.
"There are so many interesting comic book characters out there. I would love to do others."
It makes no difference to me, and it probably makes no difference to you unless you're loyal to
one company over the other, so would you like to see more of this sort of thing? If you held a
gun to my head, I'd probably rather split the roles up most of the time, although Reynolds is
pretty much ideally suited for both of these characters. But what if Robert Downey, Jr. jumped
over to DC and played Captain Marvel and then came back as Dr. Strange for Marvel? Would that be
cool with you?

Gary Oldman will not appear in Iron Man 2.
Oh, you're right. I forgot they amended that little item. Thanks.
The first thing I thought when I heard that Reynolds would be a double agent for Marvel and DC was... huh? coupled with a slight tilt of the head ala Nipper staring at the phonograph. I'm curious as to why there isn't some non-compete clause in the contract that would prevent this but perhaps Marvel is more preoccupied with current projects to care. Of course Reynolds doesn't care about being in both, two pay days versus one is a no-brainer.
At this point it doesn't matter much as both Lantern and Deadpool are unknown quantities at the box office. Should Green Lantern, which imdb lists a release date of June 17, 2011, flop then it won't matter that Reynolds was in it. However, what happens if it's a hit *and* Deadpool is a hit as well? Granted, the chances of that happening are less than the Mayans being right about December 2012 but if both flicks went blockbuster at the box office wouldn't both sides want some exclusivity to Reynolds going forward? Maybe Marvel's counting on Lantern to falter as the only DC property to really catch fire for them is Batman while Marvel has had multiple hits.
I don't care either way but it would certainly be more interesting to watch the tug of war at play if both films soared to number 1, I'm sure Reynolds would like that too.
When the Green Lantern thing was announced, I took it as Ryan's play for a franchise. Deadpool getting a series seems much less likely, particularly with all the projects Marvel is trying to throw at us at once.
I've been thinking about this for a while since I heard Warner Bros. wanted Reynolds as the Flash, but now since he's GL I don't want to see that just in case they actually do the JLA movie in the future. As for playing Deadpool and GL. it's a little weird because I'm used to seeing actors from DC based movies play villains in Marvel based stuff and vise versa. Main cases are Terrence Stamp in both Superman and Electra as well as Dick Durock as Swamp Thing and the evil Hulk on the Incredible Hulk tv show. My only problem now is I don't want to see Tobey Maguire play the Flash or Christian Bale play Captain America. There are other people out there who can play these roles if given the chance.
As for Ryan Reynolds playing another DC character or a third Marvel based one (don't forget he was in the third Blade movie) I don't want to see it. If he want's to play another comic book character make sure it's someone from another company. I don't think he'd be very good playing The Darkness, but at least it's not DC or Marvel.
