Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 12:09AM Robert Downey, Jr. Joins Todd Phillips' 'Due Date'
I don't think you could ask for more than this: Robert Downey, Jr. is joining Zack Galifianakis in the next Todd Phillips comedy, the one that will come before The Hangover gets a sequel.

Called Due Date, the film will center around Downey's frenzied trek across the country to witness he birth of his baby. His traveling companion on the road trip is Galifianakis, who I reckon is playing a character very similar to The Hangover's Alan. I said recently that this is essentially the same storyline as Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, but that's not a bad thing, is it?
The cagey vets at Variety quote Philips as saying the movie is a "buddy picture without the buddies," and I think it's a great move by Downey to return to straight comedy after his Oscar nomination last year in Tropic Thunder, which from where I sit was one of the best performances of any kind in 2008. Downey's best quality is rather out there but always precise sense of humor, and even though he'll primarily be playing the straight man in Due Date, the collaboration with Phillips and Galifianiks could be a great one.
Due Date will shoot beginning this September in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Arizona, and the film is expected to open next June. Then in October 2010, the Hangover sequel will go into production, looking to arrive on Memorial Day weekend 2011.
I'm a bit surprised that Downey's the pick here, not that I disagree in any way. But it just seemed like Due Date would be more of a Galifianakis vehicle. However, Phillips is playing with house money, and there aren't many actors who would pass at the chance to work with him right now. Well played, Phillips. Well played, Iron Man.
