Being in the upper echelon of Alfred Hitchcock films is saying something, and while there might be more artistically daring and accomplished movies in his storied career, perhaps Hitch never made another film that was as big an audience favorite as North by Northwest.

The 50th Anniversary Edition of Hitchcock's only MGM film will be released on November 3rd by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment (the actual 50th anniversary was on July 17th). Why WB and not MGM? Ted Turner bought the film years ago when he was assembling his TCM catalog, and Time-Warner now owns Turner Classic.
Eva Marie Saint is about the only remaining connection to this classic film; writer Ernest Lehman passed away last year, but he does provide a screenwriter commentary for this collection, which also feature a documentary on Cary Grant, a featurette called Destination Hitchcock: The Making of North by Northwest, plus two new documentaries: The Master’s Touch: Hitchcock’s Signature Style and North by Northwest: One for the Ages. If you buy the Blu-ray, you'll also get a 44-page booklet with pictures and loads of information about the production of the film.

The film was a massive hit back in 1959, earning the equivalent of $95 million. I don't know how many theaters there were 50 years ago, but let's just say this is probably a $250-300 million movie in today's climate. If you've never seen it, then you need to stay in more.
