'Star Trek' Sequel Being Written, Could Shoot in 2010

Over $250 million later, Star Trek has become one of the biggest and best and movies of the summer. More than likely, it will end its run as the number five movie of the season, behind Transformers, Potter, Up, and the surprising Hangover. But it's definitely the most money a Star Trek movie has ever made, and now it's time to focus on the next one.

Zoe Saldana, who plays Uhura in the new iteration of the classic series, says the creative team is already well on their way to getting the sequel in shape. "I do know that they are germinating a script," Saldana confirmed at Comic Con. "That's what they told us a month and a half ago, which actually means...in that kind of talk it means that they're probably halfway done with a script."
"They just can't present it to anybody," added Saldana. "But they're very excited, and there is a lot of pressure, because now it's like, 'Oh, do you do The Wrath of Khan or do you do this or whatever?'"
So if they're halfway done with the script does that mean we'll get the movie sooner than later? Saldana expects to shoot it next year, actually, which is good news, and she has encouraged J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman not to get bogged down with trying to fit storylines from the original TV series or the first batch of movies into their vision for the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise.
"By not listening to anyone, not putting any pressures on themselves, they were able to create something very beautiful and free that we still grew attached to," she said. "If that formula worked for Star Trek, then it can certainly work for this next one."
