Maybe it's because I enjoyed the book so much when I was younger, but I can't watch a trailer for Where the Wild Things Are without feeling better. It looks like Spike Jonze has really captured that wide-eyed imagination that comes with being a kid, and has incorporated a fairly short story into a much broader movie.

The book, of course, was written by Maurice Sendak, who is the subject of a new featurette from the film. In addition to seeing how he worked with Jonze on bringing his book to the screen in live action, we get a lot more footage than we've seen in those happiness-inducing trailers, as well as some great behind-the-scenes footage, something I'm a real sucker for.
So take a look; at one point, this project seemed completely doomed and the whole thing was basically re-shot. I don't get that vibe anymore:

Where the Wild Things Are will be released on October 16th. And I can't wait.

I always like to hear what the original creator of a work has to say when that work is adapted to film. Sendak's praise alone is probably more invaluable to Jonze than any reviews that come later. To have the author so approving of an adaptation... there's really nothing better than that.
Or you can go the James Ellroy route. He couldn't give a shit less what they do to his books so long as he gets paid on time.
Haha... let's not forget the hate-it-all by default approach employed by Alan Moore. There's room enough for all perspective takes but it's just refreshing to see the author satisfied. That Sendak, who obviously still holds his work near and dear to his heart, feels this film does right by and enhances what he wrote... I don't know, it's just a warm fuzzy feel good feeling.
I agree with you. And it's better because he doesn't do a bunch of these things, like Nicholas Sparks or somebody.
