Thursday, July 30, 2009 at 8:48AM Fourth 'Bourne' Movie On the Back Burner?
Like you, I love the Jason Bourne movies. I said two years ago and still believe that it's the
best movie trilogy. The first movie's great, the second is an improvement, and in an unprecedented development, the
best film in the franchise was the third one, The Bourne Ultimatum. Any other trilogy I can think of has some
serious issues at one point or another (most of Godfather III, the epilogue in Return of the King and
some of the first 40 minutes of Two Towers, big fan of Kieslowski's Red and White, not as high on Blue, Ewoks...) but Bourne just kept getting better and better,
and along the way, completely overhauled the spy movie genre, or didn't you see Casino Royale?

So when word of a fourth film in the franchise was initially discussed, my fear was that it would tarnish the legacy
of the trio I loved so much, and I still have plenty of doubts about the why behind it all. Now we may have to start
wondering about the when. Matt Damon was discussing his History Channel special, The People Speak, and told a
group of reporters that the script George Nolfi was supposed to finish this month still hasn't materialized, but that it's far from a dead issue.
"I just saw [producer] Frank Marshall, and we were talking about it," Bourne admitted. "Then I've talked to Paul Greengrass quite a bit about that...None us have kind of seen [a script] yet, and
Paul's still cutting a movie that we worked on (Green Zone), so we'll get together and talk about it."
So it sounds like there may not be a rush to get it done. What I find interesting is that Damon doesn't mention talking to Nolfi, even though he's acting in the writer's directorial debut, The Adjustment Bureau. It's very possible that that film, also a Universal project, has been put on the fast track, giving Bourne a little more time to develop.
Unlike the previous films, which were not very much like the books but at least showed signs of Robert Ludlum's original series, kinda, the fourth movie would branch off and be a completely new idea. There are other Jason Bourne adventures not written by Ludlum, but those won't be part of any future movies.
Another hint that the script is the big hurdle came during Damon's press conference when he stated, "Oh yeah, we won't do it unless it's good. Promise."
There was talk that it could begin filming next spring, and Brazil was given as one probable location. If The Adjustment Bureau comes first, then Nolfi probably can't finish the Bourne script for quite a while. Greengrass also has They Marched Into Sunlight, a Vietnam-era flick, on the books for next year. Damon, on the other hand, is not as busy as you'd expect, so maybe there's hope for later in 2010 to get this off the ground.
