Jason Sudeikis Goes 'The Distance' with Barrymore

Much to the chagrin of Fox Searchlight, almost nobody saw The Rocker last summer. But if you did, you saw Saturday Night Live cast member Jason Sudeikis completely walk away with the flick in limited duty.

Now he's close to doing that again, sizing up the Drew Barrymore-Justin Long romantic comedy Going the Distance. It's not much of a role, and in fact, you could probably guess what it is without being told. Just for the sake of clarification, though, The Hollywood Reporter says Sudeikis will play a character named Box, a friend of Garrett's (Long) who counsels him against trying to maintain his long-distance relationship with Barrymore's character."

In addition to Drew and Justin, who the last I heard were back on as a couple, Going the Distance has secured Christina Applegate and Charlie Day. Barrymore was part of the big ensemble for He's Just Not That Into You, which is New Line's biggest hit of the year. So it's not really surprising that the studio would rinse and repeat.

Going the Disntance will be directed by Nanette Burstein, who made last year's great documentary American Teen. I don't get the same vibe out of this one, however. It just feels like it's going to be one of those romantic comedies that appropriates the song in the title (by Cake) and throws it over the opening credits...and again over a montage...and again over the closing credits.

Then again, maybe it won't be one of those, but I'm instantly suspicious of Drew Barrymore romantic comedies.
