A Fourth 'Major League' Movie in the On-Deck Circle
Monday, July 6, 2009 at 10:25AM
It's a week away from the Major League Baseball All-Star Game and
Steroid Derby, so I can't think of a better time for talk of a fourth Major League movie to spread.

Moviehole reports that the inimitable Bob Uecker, the Hall of Fame broadcaster for the
Milwaukee Brewers, has been in touch with the creative team behind another Major
League, which would naturally bring him back as play-by-play announcer Harry Doyle. Ueck
is apparently the only source on the story right now, but if you can't trust a cast member
from Mr. Belvedere, who can you trust?
The first movie, of course, is great, stupid fun, the kind we really don't see all that much
anymore. Oh, we'll see stupid; it's just not very fun. I think I saw the sequel, and I know
I missed part three, but the original movie holds up about as well as baseball or comedies
from that era, so take that for what it's worth.
Even before reading Moviehole write the same thing, my gut told me this smacked of a
direct-to-DVD movie. There has been a trend of keeping franchises alive that way (a la American Pie) that are cheap to produce and presumably quite lucrative. It might not be worth the risk to bankroll a theatrical release with no stars, especially since you're going to have a big cast.
But just for the hell of it, I'd love Tom Berenger to still be catching in the majors at age 60.
