Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at 5:21PM 'The Crow' Reboot Will Be "A Whole New Story"
I'm not a devotee of Alex Proyas' The Crow, although I sure liked it back in the day. His high point is Dark City, and I think the movie overall gets a slight pass because of the death of Brandon Lee. You might disagree. You might also disagree with my assessment that a remake is no big deal, and in fact, can offer something new.

Director Stephen Norrington (Blade) is tackling the rebootmagining, and when that pairing was announced, Norrington said his idea was not to show us Alex Proyas' version all over again. "Whereas Proyas’ original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style," the director said in December.
Now a source tells Mania that those aren't the only changes Norrington plans to make. In fact, his film will be "very different from the original - a whole new story about a whole new character." The reasons for that could be two-fold: 1) It lets the movie exist on its own terms, and 2) It doesn't trample on the memory of Brandon Lee.
If this is the case, and it's a completely new story, then Norrington and company are just co-opting the name and some of the mythos from the comic. And now I really have no problem with The Crow because it could only encourage people to see the first one.
It always bugs me when singers do cover versions of songs that sound exactly like the original, because there's zero imagination. Whether this new Crow succeeds or fails, at least it's creating its own space.

I was a huge fan of the Crow when I saw it growing up and only recently revisited it by buying the DVD and I still dig it. I'm fine with a remake as long as its 1) a different story than the original in a different style (and it appears it will be ) and 2) It's nothing like the sequels which are AWFUL. It is kind of funny that the director of Blade will be making this 'more realistic'
A realistic movie about a guy who dies and comes back to life a year later to avenge his and his love's death? Does Stephen Norrington realize he sounds like a D-Bag? The "D" stands for douche! Plus Blade was only okay and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen sucked my balls. So do we really expect this to be a good movie?
A whole new story about a whole new character, ok so why not give it a whole new name? So long as it bears the name of the original film there will be comparisons made between the two. In most such rebooting of films, keeping hold of the original title makes sense because they're plying forth with the same character with some variation on the story. In this case where both character and story are changed why carry the title, name recognition?
As much as I loved the original movie it strayed quite a bit from the original comic, which is a masterpiece IMO, so if Norrington is going for a vibe closer to that I'm okay with a reboot.
Okay, if its a whole new story, whole new characters but same name, woulndt it be a goddamn sequel instead of a remake? this movie will suck balls, and when stephen norrington dies his spirit will get its ass kicked by Brandon Lee. Stephen Norrington SUCK MY ASSHOLE.
