Cameron Diaz in Talks to Join 'The Green Hornet'

Can Cameron Diaz save a reeling Green Hornet? I've earmarked the film as troubled because of a directorial defection by Stephen Chow that may or may not also leave the action comedy without a valuable second banana, the recent release date change that makes me suspicious that Sony is trying to bury it, and the very real possibility that the combination of Seth Rogen and new director Michel Gondry just won't mesh.

And see...I didn't even bring up how Rogen is probably not close to being an ideal candidate for the starring role. Now Entertainment Weekly reports that Diaz is angling for the female lead in the movie, though no deal is locked in. There is some precedent for a female character based on the original series, but it's not really necessary.

I suspect she'll either play Lenore Case, known as Casey in the radio and TV series. She's kind of the Pepper Potts of this story. "Clicker" Binny is also an option, a news photographer who works as a secretary for the Hornet's alter ego, Britt Reid, or Rogen and Evan Goldberg could just come up with a new role entirely.

Does it help? Maybe a bit, at least commercially. Rogen is not the draw the studios thought he would be, and frankly, neither is The Green Hornet. Diaz still has some summer weekend pop, and the movie desperately needs some of that if it wants to have any chance of surviving between Eclipse and Inception, two films that will take a fair chunk of this movie's audience from different demographics.

However, the one audience I don't think you can serve Cameron Diaz to on a silver platter is the Rogen/Apatow crowd. I could be wrong, but haven't guys in their late 20s and early 30s pretty much had their fill of Diaz by now? Would it have moved a few more tickets if she were in The Pineapple Express or Observe and Report? My guess is no.

Shooting on The Green Hornet is supposed to get underway soon, but maybe that's not such a good idea now, after all.

Yah! Yet another reason why Sony should just cancel this movie.
