Jorma Taccone Directing 'MacGruber' Movie
Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 12:05AM
I don't want you to think the glass is half empty or anything, but I don't think
there's much chance for success for a MacGruber movie. After all, it's one of the shortest and most
repetitive sketches in the long history of Saturday Night Live. And if we're being equitable, the
SNL movies are extremely hit and miss.

But they are moving forward with the film, and Will Forte will obviously star and co-write along with the
show's Jorma Taccone and John Solomon. Taccone will jump behind the camera to direct for the first time.
According to Variety, Kristen Wiig will join the cast, too, which is a given because she plays
Vicki in every MacGruber sketch, I believe. But there's some more interesting casting news: Ryan
Phillipe and Val Kilmer may join the fun. What an odd combo.
The film will shoot in August, which I guess is OK, but with Saturday Night Live getting underway
in September, that does seem like it's kind of a tight schedule what with a paperthin concept and a rookie director, hence my belief that there's not a tremendous chance of success.
I like the character, but there's a reason we never saw a Lenny and Squiggy movie: There's just not much there beyond what we already see on TV.

I will say this in its defense, the lonely island crew is funny. I know they didn't write it but Hod Rod was a surprisingly funny outing and they are one of those memorable additions to SNL that instantly improved the show. Plus Kirsten Wiig is hilarious and you know there will be other SNL cameos like Samberg and Hader. I'll probably watch it...
I think Kristen Wiig is great in small doses. When it's one of those weeks where she dominates every sketch before the musical guest, it's a bit much. In general, though, I really like her. Not so hot on the Hot Rod, however.
Some of the early skits were funny as hell but then the novelty wore off and promptly jumped the shark adding Richard Dean Anderson and Pepsuber to the mix. This would be an odd turn for Phillipe who has been pretty much locked into crime or thriller drama films for a great while now. As for Kilmer, I can see him doing it a lot more than his vocal stint in the failed Knight Rider reboot. I won't see this in theaters but then the same has held true for all SNL spawn.
Oh, it's a solid concept...for a 30-second recurring bit on a sketch comedy show.
