'Smurfs' Movie Hires the Perfect Awful Director

The Smurfs are coming to theaters, and Raja Gosnell shall lead them. Who?

You know, Raja Gosnell, the director of Scooby-Doo, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and of course, Home Alone 3, Never Been Kissed, Big Momma's House, Scooby-Doo 2, and Yours, Mine and Ours. When Big Momma's House is one your three best movies as a director and you've made more than three movies...you're not very good at your job.

It's a solid choice for a bad movie, because as we just demonstrated, Gosnell maybe got lucky things turned out so well when he made Never Been Kissed. That "so well" is relative. I can't say I was looking forward to the movie before, but now, knowing what he did to Scooby, is there any hope for a 3-D Smurfs movie?

The good news for Sony is most of Gosnell's movies have made at least a little bit of money and he clearly has no shame about the quality of the work, so it sounds like a match made in heaven. I guess internationally, this flick could be enormous. I believe it did much better overseas than it ever managed here in the states.

But here's the question: Alvin and the Chipmunks did really good business and that sequel's out this year. This one comes out next December. Can't you parents who are responsible for making these movies licenses to print money just rent some Pixar movies at home? You'll save money, you'll keep your kids out of public places (which I always welcome), and you'll send a powerful message to the studios. As a bonus, maybe Raja Gosnell won't make movies every two years.
