It helps to have a fairly broad understanding of his work, however. On its own, as an isolated hour-and-a-half of entertainment, Ponyo never rises to the levels of most of Miyazaki’s previously mentioned work. It’s never such an original interpretation of the fairy tale that we mine new meaning from it and if anything, but it does develop a stronger resonance within the scope of the director’s career, the way a stylistic curveball like Seven Years in Tibet could be more informative to students of Martin Scorsese’s work. The fairy tale setting is the sort of world the director finds himself exploring with great frequency, and the duality of the central character is reflected time and again in his other films. However, if you haven’t spent a lot of time with Miyazaki, you might just find this a rather odd but brilliantly designed Japanese version of a story you were read as a child. Outside of subliminally pimping Cyruses and Jonases, Disney has assembled a first-rate cast of actors, including Cate Blanchett, Liam Neeson, Matt Damon, Lily Tomlin, Tina Fey, and Betty White.
