Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 3:34PM 'Labyrinth' Blu-ray Set for September 29th Release
DVD Active is a great resource for not just what's coming out when but also the art and DVD/Blu-ray covers for just about everything you might be interested in. We have shamelessly used their stuff for a while now.

That brings us to Labyrinth, the Jim Henson film starring David Bowie and a young Jennifer Connelly. I almost hate to say it, but this kind of thing would be done with CGI now, and when you look at how big the cast of puppeteers was for Labyrinth, you can understand why. I don't want to give anyone an idea for a remake, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me.
There are new commentaries included on the Blu-ray, which will be released on September 29th on its own, and then at a point in the future as part of a three-pack of Henson fantasy films that also includes The Dark Crystal and MirrorMask. Here's the new cover art:

You might be asking yourself, "What anniversary is this Anniversary Edition Blu-ray celebrating?" Somewhere between the 23rd and 24th, actually. Wow, have I really carried a torch for Jennifer Connelly for nearly a quarter century? I suppose I have. But what the Anniversary Edition really means is that if you have the version released two years ago, this is the same thing, only in Blu-ray. And that one was the 21st anniversary.
However, if you didn't pick that one up, the Blu-ray will retail for about $28 to start and it has been digitally restored. Definitely worth it.
While we're on the subject of Jim Henson, I know he made a ton of money and his estate is incredibly profitable, but how underrated was he in his time, to say nothing about how poorly ajudicated his impact is on today's artists? Not so much this film in particular, but when you consider all that he did and how so much of it still has some relevance, it's pretty astonishing that his name's not mentioned more often.
