Sunday, August 16, 2009 at 1:00AM James Cameron's 'Avatar' Trailer Arrives on Thursday
By now, you've probably heard of James Cameron's Avatar, and you may even know that this 3-D science fiction epic that is expected to forever shift the landscape of filmmaking will have a special Avatar Day next Friday, giving you a chance to see about 15 minutes of Cameron's new quest for free in a theater near you. And to help promote that event, you'll be given an appetizer on Thursday.

We've learned this weekend that Cameron will release a trailer online next Thursday, and I have no doubt that it will be utterly inescapable. The one fear, of course, is that the film is so original and has so much visual impact that it might not translate well to two minutes in a standard two-dimensional format. And that very well might be a problem.
Cameron has to not only introduce this brave new world but show us stuff that justifies the hype, which is hard to do when the hype is as much about the full-on 3-D as it is Cameron's storyline. Just something to keep in the back of your mind when Thursday rolls around.
Of course, with the sticker shock associated with the price tag on this one, I would wager that Fox and Cameron have been very exacting about what's in the trailer and what footage we'll see on Avatar Day. So there's plenty of reason for optimism.
I wonder what Avatar Day will mean to Inglourious Basterds, which opens on Friday. I believe most of the locations for the Cameron footage are IMAX theaters, which won't be showing Basterds, and depending on those locations, that could impact the opening day for Tarantino. Would you want to drive all over town to see two movies Friday after work? I have, plenty of times, and it sucks.

Fortunately for Tarantino and co, the Avatar trailer will be screening before that movie, so maybe a bunch more people will see it to catch the trailer.
Just gimme Avatar already!
I hadn't heard that Avatar is screening before Basterds. They announced last week that Inception will be, although both would have been better served bowing with District 9.
GO AVATAR im so excited ahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is Avatar day happening everywhere that has Imax? Am I going to be able to catch the 15 minutes in Vancouver or is it just a US thing?
