Monday, August 17, 2009 at 6:12AM Weekend Recap: 'District 9,' 'Avatar' Trailer News, Vampires Galore
District 9 was the top movie and the top headline of the weekend. Here was a movie with a reported budget in the lowe $30 millions that turned a profit in three days, an effects-driven sci-fi movie that didn't cost anywhere close to the massive budgets of Transformers and G.I. Joe, will pay immediate dividends, got rave reviews, and thrilled audiences. How is there not a lesson here for everyone?
Beyond that film and its $37 million debut (which makes you wonder about other smaller budget movies like The Hurt Locker and Moon that can only do a fraction of that business), there were some interesting discoveries, but nothing really earth-shattering, unless you're a Twilight fan or really want to see a new Vampire Chronicles movie. Basically, then, just vampires and aliens in South Africa.
Here's the rundown of this weekend's top stories:
District 9 dominates the box office
Avatar trailer to debut on Thursday
Speaking of trailers: New Moon
Speaking of vampires: Robert Downey, Jr. as Lestat?
Bryan Singer directing a new and completely unrelated Battlestar Galactica movie?
Video: Brad Pitt goes one-on-one with Bill Maher
Movie review: Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo
Creepy trailer for The Fourth Kind with Milla Jovovich
Meanwhile, at the Hall of Justice...
The Wayans Brothers making that long-awaited White Chicks sequel (The Screening Log) Is Harvey admitting that it's over at The Weinstein Company? (The Wrap) Horror flick Trick R Treat finally gets a release date (Shock Till You Drop) SyFy executive makes fun of his network's silly movie titles (io9) Producers pimping Pimp: The Story of My Life (The Hollywood Reporter)
