Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 11:45AM 'Hobbit' Now a 3-D Trilogy? With Two Directors?
Jim Dorey at Marketsaw, who has been at the forefront on much of the Avatar news, has information for a "trusted source" about The Hobbit. Jim's usually very reliable, so while we won't take this as gospel, it's certainly worth reporting.

The news is actually really broad in its scope. We had heard that The Hobbit would probably be in 3-D. The most recent update insists that's a go, for the whole series. Speaking of the whole series, it will now be a trilogy, something that had also been discussed in recent months (and later denied). In the new scenario, the third film would be a bridge between the Hobbit movies and Lord of the Rings.
The biggest news, though, is that Peter Jackson is slotted to direct that third film instead of Guillermo del Toro, which would make sense from an aesthetic standpoint if you're talking about a bridge movie. That would get the fanboys out, even if it is a hodge podge of used Tolkien parts.
Grain of salt, of course, because the last official word we got was from Jackson, who said that the first film hasn't even been officially greenlit yet. That is only a matter of time (and a screenplay), although Jackson's just being cautious about the project, I imagine.
But if there's any truth to any of these ideas even in the conceptual stage - much less all three - it's got to be exciting news for fans of the series.

Unfookinbelievable. It'll be like anticipation of the first trilogy. Can't wait.
