For a while, the Tony Scott movie Unstoppable was teetering on the brink of never getting made, at least not in the form he envisioned. It was too expensive for the studio coming off the rather disappointing domestic performance of The Taking of Pelham 123, and with Denzel Washington attached to Unstoppable as well, his price tag and that of the movie was just too hard to justify. And I can completely see that.

Then last month, walked away and signed back in over the course of a few weeks, and the inference was that he took less money, recognizing the barrel his friend Tony was over. That's important because the film had also secured Chris Pine, the first job he took after Star Trek, but he's probably not big enough to carry a movie like this on his own.
And now that the runaway train of a movie about a runaway train is back on track, with Variety announceing that Rosario Dawson has just inked a deal to join the cast, giving Unstoppable three actors who are generally better than the lines that are written for them. I still wonder where Dawson's breakout role will be, or whether she'll always just be reliable in good movies and bad movies alike. She certainly doesn't raise any red flags about this project, though.
On the contrary, now a movie that seemed very close to getting the axe for the third or fourth time in several years will shoot this fall and open next summer. If Scott can deliver a tight thriller with no Travolta, he's proven how good his Denzel projects can be.
