Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 9:20PM Brian J. White Nominates Himself for 'Luke Cage'
Another Marvel character will get his day in the cineplex in 2011, when Luke Cage comes to theaters. John Singleton is loosely tied to the project as the director and Tyrese Gibson is even more loosely connected as Cage, a New York-based crimefighter blessed with superhuman strength. Unlike Albert Pujols, there's no reason to assume Cage is juiced.

He's basically as strong as you'd need him to be; Marvel.com says he can lift 25 tons, which, as you can imagine, comes in really handy in a fight. Cage has been affiliated with a number of Marvel groups over the years, and is linked to with Daredevil. We don't know yet exactly what ground the movie will cover.
Football player-turned actor Brian J. White has now thrown his hat into the ring, even though Tyrese is probably a better fit physically and a more well-known name. “I think I have the skill-set" White told Moviehole this week.

“Like Iron Man, you have to be able to handle drama and comedy; you have to have the physique to be able to take off your shirt; you have to have a certain statue – if you’re 5’8 it doesn’t really work so well, unless it’s a small superhero – and you have to have a certain athletic ability. That’s what I’m angling towards. These are $150 million-dollar movies, so I’m trying to pay my dues, and do the work, so that I might get a look-in.”White hasn't had any major roles, but he's been working steadily for over ten years now and if he bulks up, he could probably pull off the Luke Cage role based on his sports background and martial arts training. He was seen earlier ths year in 12 Rounds and Fighting, and will be in Drew Goddard's Cabin in the Woods next year. He still has an uphill battle, because Singleton has worked with Gibson before and has had a string of higher-profile roles that would probably give him the upper hand.

So long as names are being tossed about they might as well throw Taye Diggs into the mix. He's as much a fit if not more than Gibson. Or, all things being Marvel, maybe they'll go with one of the many relative unknown black actors looking for work.
I vote Katt Williams.
