Monday, August 24, 2009 at 2:39AM 'Bioshock' Back On, Hires '28 Weeks Later' Director
The film adaptation of Bioshock is back on, even though Gore Verbinski backed out as the
movie's director amid a budget that was expanding faster than Kelly Clarkson. But now those things have either
apparently been resolved or shoved to the side in favor of going ahead and not losing ground to the ever-circling
Halo movie and Sam Raimi's recently announced Warcraft franchise.

Variety reports that Universal and Verbinski (still producing) have hired 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to steer the
ambitious video game movie, which is a huge leap forward in his career. Fresnadillo is also developing a remake of the
60s sci-fi flick, X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes, but that is nowhere near the level of Bioshock. His deal
still has to be approved by video game designer Take-Two, but it's a definite sign that Universal wants to speed up the
process as much as it can.
There are no details about a release date or when production might begin, but it does appear that it will be made in
another country, just to cut the expenses of shooting the same film in the United States. Tax credits: Don't
underestimate them.
The good news is that the script was already in place before Verbinski got up from the director's chair, which had at
least something to do with him not wanting to work overseas for over a year on the project. So ideally, if Fresnadillo's
hiring is completely confirmed, Universal can get this back on track much sooner than previously expected.

Sweet! I'm a big fan of the video game and I thought the direction in 28 Weeks Later was very good. Too bad Uwe Boll missed out on this one.
