Monday, August 24, 2009 at 12:11AM Todd McFarlane Working on a New 'Spawn' Film
More Spawn? It's been a rumor for who knows how long, and Todd
McFarlane has spoken about it in the past. Now, though, it appears as close as ever
before.

McFarlane tells Coming Soon it's not a sequel, not a prequel, which has been one of the
lingering questions about the project for a long time. "The story has been in my head for 7 or 8 years. The movie idea
is neither a recap or continuation. It is a standalone story that will be R-rated. Creepy and scary."
"The tone of this Spawn movie will be for a more older audience," he adds. "Like the film Departed." Well,
there he lost me. But whatever.
There will be another change, too: The character won't look the way we're used to seeing him.

"I've shown the artwork [to potential investors] and he's all black; he doesn't look exactly like what people have seen in the comic book. To me, it's more along the lines of Jaws, where you didn't see [the shark] for half the movie, and then you caught glimpses of him. Jaws was somewhat fantastic in that movie, and to keep it low- budget I can't have spaceships and super-villains and all that stuff."I could take or leave another Spawn movie, personally. I wasn't wowed by the first film, at all, but at the same time, that was during an era where there was less viability in the marketplace, so maybe a second one, left alone to its own devices, might actually be a worthwhile endeavor.

He should just stick w/ the animated series, which perfectly captured the tone of the comic. The movie was a disaster at just about every level.
I was a Spawn fan back when the first film came out and it just more or less sat there doing little to ignite much of anything that might evoke long-lasting memories. I've since fallen away from the comings and goings of the comic but I do know that its taken a myriad of twists and turns from its initial incarnation. A movie that breaks from the Spawn that we know in the comics, spins toward a more creepy and I guess horror vibe that skews for a mature audience ...like that for Departed, yeh that'll work. It'll work to about a fraction of what Watchmen was able to pull off in box office receipts, though that's probably being generous.
McFarlane's star was far brighter back when the first film came out with the success of Spawn and Image comics. Much of that success seemed to go right to his head which by most accounts was a bit big already. What followed wasn't abysmal by any means and Spawn thrived in spite of him at the hands of other artists. However, while Todd was off doing one of a few hundred things besides drawing and writing Spawn fan interest began to wane. Then Spawn was split off into a number of different directions to no doubt expand/find/recapture more audience I guess. Though, I haven't since heard as much buzz around him as what had been.
This whole new movie bit is a little surprising given that Spawn's not really been much in the way of prominent. Perhaps Todd thinks that a horror Spawn in an R-rated flick will stoke fire ala Rob Zombie's Halloweens ...no sorry, I meant Departed... er, forget it.
