'Green Lantern' Production Heading To The Big Easy?
Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at 8:45PM
There has reportedly been a shake-up on the The Green Lantern front, an expensive and potentially game-changing one. It stems from the film's proposed shoot in Australia, which has hit a tipping point because the rising Australian dollar might push production costs below the already head-scratchingly high estimate of around $150 million.

The issue is that the film would no longer qualify for certain tax breaks, making a shoot down under more expensive than one of several North American destinations that offer Hollywood studios very competitive incentives. Where could it wind up? Based on previous reports of scouts looking at the are for possible locations, Slashfilm hints loudly that Green Lantern and Ryan Reynolds could take hold in Louisiana, which has become one of a handful of key destinations for producers and studios.
It's not set in stone, nor has Warner Bros. come out to say anything about the future of the project, but if it's not happening in Australia, it has to go somewhere, and it would have to stay on schedule for the June 2011 release date, one would suspect. One other issue: That somewhere has to have the local infrastructure to handle a film of this size, in part because of the shuffle. Not too many of those.
If at all possible, I'd look at that sticker price again if I were Warner Bros. If you've already got a team on site, they're getting paid. If you move, new people will get paid on top of the cost of taking this film from one continent to another.
That pushes the costs up even more on a film that simply doesn't look like it should cost $150 million. Can't the studio bring that down to a more manageable number before this gets really out of control?

They are going to shoot in Toronto @ Pinewood (Filmport) which is the largest indoor studio in North America...

What? Of course it should, its the Green fucking Lantern!
They are not shooting in Toronto.
How reliable is the other info, W? The Australia decision makes a lot of sense, but is New Orleans a greater possibility than, say, New Mexico?
