Fox Looking Back Into the 'Mirrors'

I thought Mirrors would do better last summer, but as it happens, it earned way more money than I had believed. Even though it opened with only $11 million last August, it would up hitting the $30 million mark in the US, and raked in more than $40 million in foreign markets. I don't know what it cost, but I'm pretty sure director Alexandre Aja got an end-of-the-year holiday card from Fox.

So when I read there would be a part two, I can only think it was a by-product of the international territories boosting the overall profits. Yes, we're getting that strange hybrid, the sequel to the remake, although Bloody Disgusting doesn't mention if Aja - one of the great young minds in the horror genre - will direct the new installment.

In fact, we know very little about the sequel at this point, other than Matt Venne, who previously scribbled the direct-to-DVD White Noise follow-up, has been working on the script. I'm just hypothesizing here that if Aja is not the man to direct it (he has Piranha 3-D coming out soon, and then a couple other things in development), I don't think we'd get a star the caliber of Kiefer Sutherland.

You never know, though; Fox could throw more money at it and make it enticing for some bigger name actor to take the plunge. Usually, when a movie does surprisingly good business, the sequel does operate with more coin, so that's not outside the realm of possibility. I still believe a lot of it hinges on Aja, and since he's written everything he's directed, I doubt he'd come back for a project he didn't write.
