Judd Apatow Says 'Anchorman 2' "A Possibility"
Friday, August 28, 2009 at 10:37AM
Before The 40-Year-Old Virgin made Judd Apatow a household name, he had written and produced comedies for years. One of the films he co-produced before his directorial debut was Anchorman, so Empire took the opportunity to ask Apatow if he had heard anything about a possible sequel.

"They’re making a movie now, [Will Ferrell and Adam McKay],” Apatow said, a reference to The Other Guys, a comedy due out next year. However, the door seems open for more Ron Burgundy. "I guess it’s a little bit more a possibility than it was a year ago, when it wasn’t being discussed at all.”
To me, it makes perfect sense from a business standpoint to revisit the Channel 4 News Team. Ferrell's biggest hit ever was Elf, and that was six years ago. His second biggest hit was Talladega Nights, released three years ago. In fact, he's had more movies since Elf that haven't been smash hits than ones that have been.
The two characters he's most identified with are probably Ricky Bobby and Ron Burgundy, although it was really Anchorman that more or less confirmed he was a movie star. That's been hard to prove over the last three years, though. So just in terms of career longevity; it's not like he'd be the first guy to make a sequel he probably shouldn't make.
But Apatow says that Ferrell and McKay have tons of ideas for another movie, so maybe a sequel is perfectly in order. When I talked to Ferrell about this subject back in 2004, he had a prequel idea. Two years ago he told me he had a sequel he was kicking around, but not seriously. And now Apatow remembers one concept that sounds pretty good to me: "Those anchormen sometimes have their jobs until they’re 75 years old. So we would always laugh that this movie could work if everybody’s really elderly.”
An older Brick Tamland losing even more of his tenuous grasp on reality? That would be too good to pass up.
Oh, and that's the other thing: Everyone in the principal cast has said within this calendar year that they would absolutely do an Anchorman sequel. The schedule to work around is obviously Steve Carell's, because he has TV and movies going on all the time. But he's up for it, Paul Rudd's up for it, and now that it's being discussed more than it was 12 months ago, the writing may be on the wall here.

Colin...time for you to jump into the producing ring and put all the "Get the Big Picture" dollars to work. Make this movie happen!
All of our dollars wouldn't go very far. But I'd rather see Ron Burgundy again than some shitty half-baked Ron Burgundy type in another movie altogether.
