FX Puts Out the Fire on 'Rescue Me'

FX has announced that Rescue Me will air its last episodes in the 2011 season, ordering the final 19 installments of the critically acclaimed and Emmy nominated series.

The show was one of the first on FX to really establish itself, as part of an overall trend among basic cable networks to embrace and develop quality series to compete not only with broadcast networks but rivals on pay cable, as well. Rescue Me stars and was created by Denis Leary, who brought the rough-and-tumble firefighter series to FX in response to the events of September 11th.

The show has been hit hard by the migration to DVR viewing, a common occurrence for shows that skew younger and male in their audience demographics. Last year alone, the show was down 38% in total viewers, according to Variety, but those figures are buoyed by DVR and video on demand viewing.

By the time the series ends, it will have aired for seven seasons, which is a very impressive run on FX. The 19-episode order represents both the 2010 and 2011 seasons, although whether or not it's ten episodes the first year or the second isn't yet known.

Rescue Me was a very good show, but has been hit hard by two things:

1. The Writers Strike.
2. Growing apathy towards the events of 9/11 as that day gets further distanced in the rear view.

I'm glad to hear that the last two seasons will go back to the short-season format of the first 4 seasons, as this years 25 show arc seems a little long in the tooth and...directionless. It's definitely not must see viewing like it once was...

Still, Tommy Gavin and his homies are a fun, interesting bunch, and I hope that the set death-date of the show will bring some closure to this saga. I find it to be quite Shakespearean.

The series is amazing awww Im so fucking bummed and I was having a pretty good day up until hearing this.....

I mean like Woody Allen says in Annie Hall "Look at LA it's so so clean...Yeah it's clean b/c they put their trash on television" haha

---The TV show Rescue Me is one of the very few TV shows that IS FARRRR FROM THAT!!!!

Even though I do agree with Will above, the series was so unbelievable and certainly unavoidable in its first few seasons, I mean it became addicting for me and I ABSOLUTELY HATE TV !!!! (for the most part, beside a very few shows)

And yes it is not must see anymore even though I have been getting back into it & therefor I'am bummed about the news....

I MEAN WHY CANCEL THE SHOW??
WHAT THE HELL IS THE REASON??

THEY COULD ALWAYS MARKET & PROMOTE DIFFERENTLY & ATTRACT NEW VIEWERS!!!

Rescue Me is one of the best shows on TV. Denis Leary and Peter Tolan do an excellent job of combining comedy and drama. It is going to be missed.
