Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 4:26PM Kate Beckinsale Says 'Underworld 4' Just a Rumor
There's something not quite right with Kate Beckinsale's denials about a
fourth Underworld movie. While talking to Collider (via Filmonic), the lovely Ms.
Beckinsale said, "I’ve heard they’re talking about a fourth one, but I don’t know if that’s
officially happening or it’s that a rumor. As far as I’m concerned it’s just a rumor."

Why is that comment suspect? Because a whopping portion of the Underworld money gets mailed
to Kate's house. Her husband, Len Wiseman, wrote and directed the first two films in the series,
and produced all three. Because he would still get some credit for the characters on which the
fourth movie is based - and therefore some mailbox money - it's astonishing that Beckinsale would
be completely in the dark on it.
Now that we got that out of the way...Beckinsale did add, however, "I think if they came up with
an amazing script I wouldn’t be averse to it. But it’s not planned or anything."
Frankly, I can't think of any other way for this franchise to stay afloat other than bringing back
Beckinsale. The third one was really bad, so clearly extending the Rhona Mitra storyline isn't a
viable option. Neither is going in a completely new direction again.
The rumors were that this fourth movie would hit theaters in January 2011 and that Beckinsale would be back. I guess if her new film, Whiteout, tanks she might be even less averse to coming back.

It's a negotiatong tactic called playing hard to get to drive home the point that some serious money will have to change hands for things to happen.
And the third one wasn't really bad but it suffered from a low-budget look and feel.
The problem is that thefirst Underworld felt a bit innovative in the vampire genre, while the two sequels brought nothing new. A bit like Blade, although Blade Trinity is the best of the series.
So, the trick is to go innovative again. Perhaps Mr Beckinsale is the wrong person to do it?
I agree with you Lengthy on the first one....It DID feel innovative and made it worth watching. IMO, 2 wasn't bad...I still haven't seen 3 yet. Better move it up on my Blockbuster online.
