Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 3:15PM Matthew Vaughn Wants to Direct 'The Avengers'
With the somewhat feverish response to his early footage from the comic book adaptation Kick-Ass, director Matthew Vaughn might have plenty of reason to put together a wish list of movies he'd like to make. And perhaps, not surprisingly, one monster summer flick is at the top of his list.

"I'd love to do The Avengers," Vaughn admitted to MTV. "I was desperate to do Iron Man about 8 years ago, and everyone was like, 'Iron Man? No one will go watch that.'"
There is some precedent for Vaughn to feel so strongly about superhero movies, especially Marvel flicks: He was in the running to direct Thor before Kenneth Branagh was hired for the job. He also says it would be cool to re-invent the Superman franchise, but who's to say what's going to happen with that?
The Avengers probably will fall to Jon Favreau, who we know will be at least a producer and will have two Iron Man movies under his belt. If it doesn't, it still doesn't make sense for Marvel to bring in someone new when you'll have Branagh, Louis Letterier, and Joe Johnston already in the Avengers arc. Of those, I would suspect only Branagh has a chance to guide the film all of these stories have been pointing toward.
But if you've got some other comic book movie, I'd hit up Vaughn. Layer Cake and Stardust were both very good, and Kick-Ass came away from Comic Con as one of the surprise hits, so he's definitely got everything going in high gear.

I don't know if Marvel would ever do this - wasn't Vaughn the guy they brought in to replace Singer for X-Men: The Last Stand who stepped away from the project weeks before shooting started?
Once bitten, twice shy, methinks.
