Now this is what 3-D is supposed to be: Joel Silver wants to produce a new version of Swamp Thing. The original film wasn't nearly as good or as campy as I think it was meant to be, which I blame on there really being no established market in the studio system for something like that in 1982. As a result, it was kind of a mess of influences that wound up too much in the middle.

But because of its comic book origins, and because it is supposed to heavy on the queso, that makes it a good candidate for the current 3-D renaissance. What I didn't know, until Silver (the Matrix trilogy among seemingly hundreds more) talked to Collider, is that he's already had the rights to this film for years.

"I'm developing a picture now that I'd like to do. I'll hopefully do Swamp Thing, which is a movie we've had for a long time. We think that would be great to do in 3D. There are a couple of projects I'm thinking about (for the format) but not everything. Maybe I'm going to do it. I like it."I think what we're seeing here is a lot of studios and filmmakers putting their chips on the table regarding 3-D with plenty of chances to pull the chips back before going all in. There's no surefire example of live-action success with the format yet; only two horror movies, The Final Destination and My Bloody Valentine have really benefitted from it, and even then, we're not talking about massive blockbusters. The animated films that have found success using 3-D probably were destined to make money anyway. All of this leads to Avatar, and after that, we'll see what the mindset becomes. I do think, regardless of the trends, this one is custom made for a 3-D remake.
