Trailer - Timberlake, Bridges Hit 'The Open Road'

There are two things about the trailer for The Open Road that stood out to me. The first is the tagline, which considering what appears to be a pretty standard story and a fairly inexpensive trailer, is surprisingly clever. Not saying it's great, just clever. I won't give that away, though. The other thing that stands out, as he often does, is Jeff Bridges.

Bridges has never taken the easiest path. He could have been a much bigger star in his 80s and 90s heyday, but he preferred more substantial, original roles like Starman, Fearless, and The Fisher King. He has four Oscar nominations but it should really be six or seven. He stands out to me here for another reason, though: what can a really good leading man do when the material probably isn't terribly unique? Does he wilt or does he find that there's a lot more room to explore the character? Hell, he was worth watching in Stick It, for crying out loud.

In The Open Road, he co-stars with Justin Timberlake, a born performer if not a great actor (at least not yet). So I don't expect the cast to offer Bridges much resistance if he chooses to walk away with this movie completely. Oh, it's also got Mary Steenburgen and Kate Mara, who should have been in more movies by now.

If you know something about Anchor Bay, it's probably that the company is a home video specialist. But Anchor Bay will get into the theatrical distribution game a little more aggressively now. This film hits theaters on August 28th, and there are a couple more lined up by the end of the year, I think.

By the way, Bridges' six or seven nominations would be The Last Picture Show, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Starman, Fearless, The Fisher King, The Big Lebowski, and The Contender. Some combination of those. Only the first three and The Contender actually earned the nod, however.
