What Will They Do About Sidney in 'Scream 4'?

How do you handle a franchise revival when its star tells you she doesn't want to be involved? If you're Kevin Williamson and it's Scream, that could mean you just kill off Sidney Prescott.

Back in June, Williamson said he had no idea what he'd do with Scream 4 after Neve Campbell passed on returning to the series. To me, the bigger question became not what Williamson would do but rather what Campbell is thinking. It's OK, Neve; we never really took you all that seriously anyway.
In a recent chat with MTV, Williamson let it slip that Scream 4 is "gonna sort of involve our returning characters - the only characters left alive,” he said. “We’ve got Courteney Cox and David Arquette returning.” Oops. "The only characters left alive." Hmm.
Now, I've got this all worked out: Sidney's death leads Team Arquette back into the action to find her killer. Sounds pretty simple to me. Ties up a loose end, bridges the first three movies with the new one, and sets in motion a course of action for the heroes. Done.
There's still no word on whether or not Wes Craven will return to direct volume four, but I'm fairly certain he will. Seems too easy, doesn't it?

WHY would you have a problem with an actor/actress NOT wanting to do what in all likelyhood looks to be a crappy/unnecessary sequel to a movie from almost a decade ago...because they don't make e enough of those?
What else does she have going on? Sad as it may seem, this franchise is her cultural legacy. If she'd bowed out after one, then I'd have no problem with her not coming back. But she did the first trilogy. She'd likely propel herself back into better work that people would actually see if she starred in a movie that had a big opening weekend.
I can't see a reason why she shouldn't come back, frankly. Fans of the series would enjoy it, she'd get more attention, and she'd get a healthy payday.
