Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at 2:41AM Emily Blunt's 'Young Victoria' Ends Toronto Film Fest
It usually means something, so we'll see if landing the coveted closing night slot for The Young Victoria at the Toronto Film Festival will lead to bigger and better things. The film stars Emily Blunt as Queen Victoria, she who was not amused, and you have to think this is the kind of weighty undertaking a lot of observers predicted would come her way after her breakthrough in The Devil Wears Prada.

You can get a wider rundown of the big Toronto events at Variety - plus, it's written in that cool Hollywood lexicon where "president" is "prexy" and "premieres" is shortened to "preems" - but this is a pretty good slot for a film that doesn't yet have a distributor in the U.S., although apparently that's not too far off.
Here's some trivia for you: This British period piece focusing on a British monarch starring a British cast is produced by that noted Anglophile Martin Scorsese.
It appears that The Young Victoria will follow the rules of Elizabeth, which did not cover the entire reign of the queen in one movie. That would be nearly impossible with Victoria, though, since she reigned for over 60 years. Somehow, England managed to not go belly-up when it ascended an 18-year-old girl to the highest position in the land. Could you even imagine that today?
When a distributor is finally announced, we should get a clearer picture of what the release of this film should look like. In the meantime, it'll close down Toronto on September 19th.
