Rose McGowan Confirms 'Red Sonja' Shoots in 2010

Red Sonja was delayed a bit thanks to, of all things, the bad economy. The poster image we're using here debuted at Comic Con over a year ago, and still there's not a frame of film to show for it.

But it's still on, apparently. Rose McGowan recently Tweeted that she's "still contracted to do Red Sonja. Saying it should shoot next year, McGowan mini-blogged, "I pulled out of doing it in '09. Not permanently. Hopefully will follow Conan."

The reason, of course, is simple: It's the same group of producers. Conan is scheduled to go into production soon, so that schedule is certainly the best option since Conan begat Red Sonja in the comics.

Part of the confusion about Red Sonja may stem from Barbarella, which Rose's boyfriend, Robert Rodriguez, was scheduled to direct at one point, and on top of that, Rose was going to be poorly cast in that role...I mean playing that role, too. And since both movies went back on the shelf for a while, it may have been believed that Rose was out the door on Red Sonja, too.

The big question is really whether or not the sword-and-sandal trend will continue. And actually, it may be too early to even call it a "trend." All of this - Clash of the Titans, Conan, Sonja - is a reaction to 300, but there really hasn't been much else in the way of gladiator movies since. Certainly, McGowan isn't going to guarantee a ton of pre-sales for tickets on her own, so I don't know if this is going to perform the way they think it might.
