Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 6:17AM Edgar Wright Kind of Denies Pixar's 'Ant-Man'
I suppose it's kind of a denial, but one of those suprisingly rigid off-the-
cuff remarks that still feels like it's hiding something. It all began about a week ago when
Entertainment Weekly wrote that Pixar and Marvel have already discussed making the Ant-
Man movie together. We talked about it a couple days ago. Makes more sense than a live-action
Ant-Man, that's for sure.

Now Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) is opening up about the project he's spent a few years
working on. CHUD talked to Wright about Ant-Man and the closest thing he came to saying the
Pixar rumor isn't true was, "The news that Pixar is involved is not wholly accurate and a little
premature to comment on," adding, "I love Pixar's work more than anyone and indeed would love to collaborate
with them."
That hardly sounds like a negative to me. "Not wholly accurate" is a far cry from "not true."
So could Wright be involved with Pixar? Not that he's letting on, although that would be a bold,
bold move for Marvel, the director, and especially Pixar. But we postulated that if this were a
Pixar flick, it wouldn't be on the scale of The Incredibles, so as long as you're
experimenting, you might as well go for it.
But Wright has been developing this thing for a long time, and he almost certainly wasn't thinking
animation the whole time. So that's another point against the collaboration, but if Disney exerts
its force, it'll get whatever it wants.
Wright also took the opportunity to discuss the character in general, and the fear/belief/position
that Ant-Man just isn't important enough to get his own movie:

"It's true that the character is not considered one of the Marvel brand leaders and that is precisely what excites me about it. I want to make a film inside the Marvel Universe that is something a little different; a genre film within the superhero genre so to speak."Ah, but wouldn't working with Pixar make it something a little different?

I think making a superhero movie a little different could be done with a character like Ant Man. Especially if they incorporate it into the Avengers film universe with all the crossovers they have working now. With Wright directing you have to imagine it as an action comedy which is what he is great at. So what about a superhero satire? Say the Ant Man character is seeing all the other heroes (Cap, Iron Man, Thor, and Hulk) on the news and then decides to become a superhero himself? Being a scientist and not a skilled fighter should add enough comedy to the action on it's own to make it a good and entertaining film. What do you think?
With Wright's touch I'm looking forward to this film. I think when it's done it is going to surprise a lot of people.
