Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 11:02AM Fearless Forcast: Tyler Perry Wins All By Himself
I always forget when Tyler Perry has a movie coming out, perhaps because there's no chance I'll get to see it without finding a screening myself on opening weekend. I believe only two of Perry's films - the first Madea flick and whatever the relationship drama was after that - were screened for the press, and now that Perry doesn't need reviews, Lionsgate doesn't bother.

So he has I Can Do Bad All By Myself in theaters this weekend, and as much as recent Oscar nominee Tajari P. Henson might be a good enough reason to invite press reaction to the film, no dice. But it will win the weekend, which Perry usually does. Lionsgate has always done a good job positioning his films at relatively weak spots on the calendar, and there's no crime in that.
Perry's latest will beat Sorority Row, the new R-rated horror flick, and Whiteout, the Kate Beckinsale movie with more scrapped release dates than reasons to see the film. There's some carryover between those audiences, which won't help either one of them, plus they share a sliver of the same crowd with 9, the animated movie that opened on Wedesday.
What about 9's box office potential? I think it's limited and I'm not convinced that the 9.9.09 ploy is much more than a contrivance. Overall for the first five days, it might do business in the mid-teens, which keeps it on par with Sorority Row, slightly ahead of Whiteout.
It's worth pointing out that Inglourious Basterds was the number one movie in the country every day from Sunday to Tuesday, overtaking The Final Destination. I would say that of the previously released films, it probably has the strongest edge on the rest of the competition and will sail past $100 million by the time Monday rolls around. Has anyone else noticed that a higher percentage of quality films are not going quietly into that good night?
The Top Five:
1 - I Can Do Bad All By Myself ($18.5 million)
2 - Sorority Row ($14.5 million)
3 - Whiteout ($11 million)
4 - Inglourious Basterds ($9.5 million)
5 - 9 ($9 million)

You know I kinda hope "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" wins the box office!
I mean Tyler Perry in my opinion is quite a talent, he is gifted, I mean he's such a threat, writer, actor, director, producer, playwright, owns his own STUDIO!
However his films aren't the greatest of rated, which kinda bums me out but that's because they aren't that good, but THE THING IS WITH TYLER PERRY I FEEL LIKE HE HAS SO MUCH TALENT BUT HE HASNT EXPLORED HIS FULL POTENTIAL
He's mainly comedic and writes comedy more so and finds the happier things in life, but I have a feeling sometime sooner or later, he will write and make movies that are possibly darker and more dramatic, BECAUSE NO ONE CAN DENY HE HAS AN AUDIENCE AND HIS FAN BASE IS ONLY GROWING, in my opinion
I dunno I hope he goes that direction or make even better films b/c this guy churns out #1 box office films or films in general every year or so....
Thats something Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Woody Allen, Robert Rodriguez, just dont do, but when they do put out films they tend to be fairly good....
-perhaps the only writer/director that is up to his pace is Judd Apatow, I cant think of any others...
So I dunno what do people think?
