Friday, September 11, 2009 at 8:06AM Meet the 'Wild Things': New Character Posters
On October 16th, Where the Wild Things Are will arrive in theaters
nationwide, and that's been a bumpy road. Depending on who or what you believe, this film was in
shambles when director Spike Jonze handed it in to Warner Bros. The studio wasn't content with
that, and so the story goes that Jonze essentially re-shot the whole movie, or enough of it that
he might as well have started over.

But from the trailers and the posters, you'd never know this was a troubled production. Jonze is
his own breed of cat, so it's not entirely surprising that he'd have a finished product of a story
that has so many baked-in expectations that didn't line up with what the studio thought it would
get. Hopefully, they've found that happy medium between art and commerce. However, If I had to
choose one over the other in this case, I'd fall on the side of art.
I love the new character posters for Where the Wild Things Are, which are arriving a little
later than I would have thought. Usually, these come pretty early on in the marketing. Still,
they're very enjoyable.

The one thing I do wonder about is whether or not the parts of the story that Jonze had to add (the book is something like 40 pages long) interrupt that sensibility in Maurice Sendak's original text that make it so special and timeless. If Jonze keeps that stuff in tact...well, then, look out.
