Prepare For 'The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made'
Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 4:40PM
Back around the time that Forgetting Sarah Marshall came out, Jason
Segel, who co-wrote and starred in the film, was announced as the new writer for the first
theatrically released Muppet movie in over 10 years. Disney has finally unveiled the name of the
upcoming film, which borrows from the title of an unproduced project developed by Jim Henson back
in the mid-1980s.

The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made had a different story when Henson was working on it
than what Segel has described in the past year-and-a-half. The original idea focued on Gonzo
directing a movie and wasting his budget so quickly that when it came time to actually shoot it,
well, it was duct-taped together.
Segel had mentioned that his screenplay was about saving the famed theater seen in The Muppet
Show from the clutches of an evil tycoon, but that doesn't exactly require the catchy and very
specific title. So it's possible that the Henson family or Disney could have reject part or all of Segel's screenplay idea.
Coming Soon reported on this development at Disney's D23 Expo, but there are no ironclad details either about the direction of the script or a possible release date. Segel has a busy schedule over the next year or more, so depending on his involvement, we may be a couple years away from another Muppet movie. And not a moment too soon.
