'The Ring 3' Coming in 3-D?

It should come to pass that The Ring franchise is finally decided in a third film. After all, it was supposed to be a trilogy - much like its Japanese inspiration - but the second movie was such a letdown that all the momentum the series had was stopped in its tracks.

Bloody Disgusting says there is talk of reviving The Ring, perhaps as a 3-D flick. And with the success of The Final Destination, which is the biggest entry in that franchise, dusting off the Samara story can't be the worst idea in the world. I think we'll need a new Samara, however: Daveigh Chase was 11 when the first movie was filmed and now she's 19. Dead girls don't age.

I don't remember enough about the second movie to know whether or not there's any story left to visit. I'm sure they can come up with another way to do the death tape, perhaps have it be some virus that infects people's iPhone or something. I mean, the VHS concept is a bit outdated. The third Ringu film was a prequel, so I guess that's an option.

There's nothing official from the studio, and even Bloody Disgusting puts quotes around "talk" when describing where the potential threequel is in development. Really, as much as I don't like using 3-D for the sake of employing a gimmick, that's the only reason I can think of to head back to this series. And that's a bit of a shame given how good Gore Verbinski's 2002 film is.

I like it, a new iPhone application that kills in 7 days. I hate 3D live action as an idea but I can concede that it might be a good gimmick for horror flicks, this one in particular since the dead girl comes out of the TV (iPhone and such).
