'Smurfs' Delayed Until Summer 2011
Monday, September 14, 2009 at 12:36AM
It's not surprising that something moved away from the weekend of December 17, 2010. After all, we've got The Green Hornet, Tron Legacy, The Smurfs, and Yogi Bear, and that's a lot of wide releases, plus the unknown Oscar bait that will probably be unfurled that weekend, too.

And the first movie to blink is The Smurfs. Coming Soon announces that Sony will instead push the movie back to the summer of 2011 (July 29th), which seems like a worse fit than the holidays, but since Sony had also moved Hornet to that weekend not long ago, something like this seemed bound to happen.
Conversely, you could argue that it doesn't bode well for the studio that moves one movie twice, eventually placing it in a weekend it didn't think it could hold with another film in the first place. Smurfs and Yogi quite obviously share an audience, so clearing that mess up makes sense, but why shove it into the next summer?
Right now, there's nothing else on that weekend, and there's enough distance between it and Kung Fu Panda and Cars 2 that it could likely do better in he new location. So, if your glass is half-full, then this is a really smart move.
Of course, Sony could have just as easily moved it to the following Wednesday next December, and it wouldn't have any direct competition there, either.
