J.J. Abrams Sort of Updates 'M:I 4' and 'Star Trek 2'

J.J. Abrams may well be at the top of his game. His ambitious TV drama, Lost, is entering its last season as another sci-fi series, Fringe, kicks off its second. He directed one of the biggest hits (and best movies) of the summer in Star Trek, and he's on the hook to provide a sequel to that film and another Mission: Impossible. And yet: He still can't afford the lasik surgery.

Abrams, ostenisbly pushing Fringe, sat down with Sci Fi Wire, and the subject naturally turned to the movie projects. On a Trek sequel, Abrams said, "We're hopefully going to have everyone, obviously, from the first cast," then joked, "I keep trying to spread this rumor that I'm going to recast Kirk as Greg Grunberg, but no one ever prints it."

We also learned that Abrams and company have a direction for the next voyage of the star ship Enterprise ("We have some really cool ideas") but that it's too early to get into the specifics.

Now...M:I IV is probably closer, and Abrams says writers Andre Nemec and Josh Applebaum will get him a script by the end of the year. But will Abrams just produce it, a role that has already been confirmed, or will he be back behind the camera?

"I'm open to anything," Abrams said. Given how close to the vest Abrams plays information about his projects, that may not sound like a confirmation of anything, but I'd be really surprised if he lets somebody else direct it. The third Mission was the best of the bunch, and even though Abrams is one of the best in the business at developing writers and directors beneath him, but he's never pulled back as a director in established film series before. He could, but I doubt it.
