Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 8:20PM Writer, Director for 'Halloween 3-D' Made Official
Dimension Films announced just a couple days after Halloween II was released that we'd get a third movie less than a year from now, although Rob Zombie wouldn't be returning. Whether or not that new was intended to boost ticket sales for the current sequel I don't know, but I can say with certainty that it didn't help a bit.

But now the studio has made Zobmie's replacement for Halloween 3-D official, according to Bloody Disgusting, and as I mentioned when the rumor first came to light, there's not a better pick than Patrick Lussier. He'll direct the film, and his most recent credit was this year's My Bloody Valentine remake, so since this threequel will also be in 3-D, hiring the guy who used the technology better than anyone else in the genre almost seems too easy.
Doubly good news is that this is a package deal; Bloody Valentine writer Todd Farmer is handling the new Halloween script. I suppose it's worth mentioning that in the original series, Halloween III was so vastly different from the previous two movies that it didn't even contain Michael Myers. I doubt even with the change of direction here that Dimension would ditch the masked killer, but I do think we'll see a different kind of storyline now, one less concerned with mommy and sister issues.
Having said all that, this news is as good as you could reasonably expect from this franchise. At one point late last year, Dimension wanted to make a DVD-only Halloween 3, but the interest in 3-D movies kind of supercedes that plan, I'm thinking. If it's as fun as Bloody Valentine, it will at least be worth checking out. That's hardly a sure thing, though.

This is both a blessing and a curse. I agree with you Colin that MBV3D is a shlocky but entertaining gorefest. But that movie felt really tongue-in-cheek and purposely B-movie-esque. The "Halloween" series is one that's pretty self-important and serious when it comes down to the story and scares. I think it's the right director/writer combo for the format, but for the wrong movie.
Considering the finality of Zombie's Halloween II (making up for its predecessor) I really think making a third installment is the wrong way to go. The Halloween franchise lost much if its impact and respect with the abominable Resurrection (I won't even acknowledge its place in the original series), so by making Halloween 3-D, Dimension is heading down the same path it did back in 2002, and will doubtlessly alienate fans from the series once again. Say what you will about Zombie's vision of Halloween, but he did a better job with both his films than many of the orginal sequels (and made you forget about 2002's mistake). There is no reason to continue; let Michael rest in peace, and Patrick Lussier direct something else to satisfy the gory 3-D need; if he must do a remake, then why not Maniac, or The Prowler? Who knows, he might improve them.
but Micheal Myers isn't supposed to die
do you know how many people will be disappointed? (especially me)
if they don't continue the franchise then someone else is just gonna reboot it again anyway
As a true fan of the series I say let Patrick have a go at it. I was so appalled at Rob Zombies lame re-envisioning attempt that I am ready for a breath of fresh air, especially after the horrible RZH2. MBV was an entertaining film with lots of thrills and scares, which is what horror movies are supposed to be like. So let's hope that Lussier brings us back to the real Haddonfield.
