Monday, September 21, 2009 at 11:57AM Clooney, Damon Set for Hamdan v. Rumsfeld Movie
It is not unlike George Clooney and Matt Damon to tackle politically delicate issues in their films, nor is it unlike them to work together, and the cyclone of information about The Challenge seems to indicate that they'll both be on board the movie adaptation of the story of Navy lawyer Charles Swift, who represented terrorist suspect and Guantanamo Bay inmate Salim Ahmed Hamdan in the case that saw the US Supreme Court rule against the Bush administration sidestepping Congress in trying Gitmo detainees.

The primary issue in Hamdan vs. Rumsfeld was that the administration was perceived as trying to work around the definitions of the Geneva Conventions, which puts this right in line with some of the truth-to-power movies from the 1970s that Clooney admires so much. George snagged the property a while ago - he's very good at that - and Slashfilm has pooled some other resources claiming he might also direct the project.
Early on, he was also thought to be in the running to play Swift, whom the Navy discharged after the case was resolved. Now, however, it appears that Damon will play the part, and that's likely a much better decision.
"George just wasn’t right for the part, thank God, so I got to play it," Damon tells Female First. "He gets enough good roles, he doesn’t need all the good ones, he’s got to leave some for the rest of us!"
There's no clear word as to when this one might happen. Clooney and Damon always have pretty full schedules, but Clooney tends to work pretty efficiently as a director/producer, so it could be a fairly quick production once it gets up and running.
