Monday, September 21, 2009 at 7:35PM 'Sherlock Holmes' Sequel Already Confirmed, Pitt Pitched Again as Moriarty
It was rumored about for the upcoming Sherlock Holmes, a rumor Warner
Bros. vehemently denied, but now it appears that Brad Pitt will play Sherlock Holmes' archrival,
Professor Moriarty, though not in the movie due out this December.

Instead, The Hollywood Reporter says that the studio, Guy Ritchie, Robert Downey, Jr., and
the rest of the cast are expected to return for a sequel and that Pitt has had discussions about
playing Moriarty. The character, according to those familiar with the script is referenced in
Sherlock Holmes but is never seen.
The sequel is said to include writers Kieran and Michele Mulroney, who have already delivered a
Justice League: Mortal script to Warner Bros., although work has not begun on the story.
From what I can tell from Sherlock Holmes, it's only a cursory glance at the legendary
character and his world. I would guess that rolling Moriarty into the sequel more centrally might
push this second movie into more familiar territory, perhaps building to the legendary Reichenbach Falls angle. It would be a shame if they didn't include that eventually, even with the
reinvention.
The big question is whether or not Pitt is the right man for the job. He wouldn't be my pick,
although from a studio perspective, this is a big project and part of a bigger franchise; you get
the star with the highest-wattage star you can in a lot of cases.
This move is a demonstrable show of faith in the film. Let's not forget that Warners didn't wait around to order the Hangover sequel, either, announcing that project a couple months early, as well.

Is it wrong that I want Moriarty to have no physical ability and be all about the mind.
