Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at 9:44PM Diablo Cody to Write 'Sweet Valley High' Movie
Hot on the heels of the...uh...success? of Jennifer's Body, Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody is heading back to school, namely Sweet Valley High. Yep, Cody will adapt and
produce at least the first entry in what you can only imagine will be a franchise of movies based
on the oh-so-popular series of books.

Sweet Valley High began in 1983, when writer Francine Pascal first sent identical twins
Elizabeth and Jessica to high school. They were, as it turns out, extremely poor students; the
girls remained in school until 2003.
A TV show followed the success of the books in 1994, although with much less widespread fanfare,
and it only lasted about four years.
There's no specific information about the direction Cody will take the series or the characters,
although Variety does say there was a bidding war
between Fox and Universal. It's hard to say that she's the first name that comes to mind when
looking at this project, but perhaps that's exactly why she got the gig. I wouldn't expect it to
be exactly the same as the sugary-sweet Sweet Valley we have in mind.
Then again, maybe Diablo will show her versatility and keep this straightlaced. Wouldn't that be
something? Either way, it doesn't sound like it's up my alley, but it's still a fairly noteworthy
partnership.

I'm excited for this, even though I'm not a huge fan of Ms. Cody (I found the dialogue in both "Juno" and "Jennifer's Body" as trying WAY too hard to be funny/cutesy/sassy). The way I see the film is as a "Brady Bunch" or "Starsky and Hutch" style parody/homage to the original source material. And I think that this would be up her alley.
Or it could be the story about a quirky pregnant girl with a HOT DOG phone who drinks CAPRI SUN by the gallon.
