Michael Caine: No Johnny Depp in 'Batman 3'

I had planned to do a Batman Rumors Greatest Hits article, and I may still get around to it, but clearly the lead single on such a Greatest Hits collection would be Johnny Depp as The Riddler. Depp said once he'd be open to it, but that's hardly confirmation, and if you believe - as I do - that The Dark Knight Returns or whatever it is might still be three more years away, then the Depp rumor and all the rest don't add up to much.

Late last year, Michael Caine rather uncharacteristically told reporters that the studio really wanted Depp for that role, which started a new avalanche of unconfirmed "news."As with each one of these stories, either David Goyer, the studio, or common sense intervened to say Christopher Nolan was working on Inception, that unlike the Batman movies it would literally be starting from scratch, that it would be at least as long a process as making The Dark Knight, and that Nolan, his brother, and Goyer had only discussed the third movie to the degree that the series was designed to have one.

Now Caine is backtracking, admitting fault in spilling the Depp rumor last year, and even starting another one through his denial."Johnny Depp is great in anything, but there is no Johnny Depp in this Batman," Caine told MTV. "They tell me in no uncertain terms."

Now, before you go off half-cocked and think no Depp means no Riddler, Caine really means that there's no Depp because there's no process through which Nolan would even arrive at the character or the casting. "There is nobody, there's no script, there's nothing," he says.

"It can't possibly be made before 2011 because Inception is such a big picture."

Exactly.

The next Batman should be called Dark Victory... first because it sounds like it wraps up a trilogy nicely and second because you cannot (or should not) use the title The Dark Knight Returns for any Batman film that is not based on the iconic comic of the same name. I'm not saying you have to necessarily tell the Dark Victory story (the origin of Robin, although that is the direction I might take if they can find the right 14-15 year old actor to pull it off) but it just makes for a nice title. Robin with villains Two Face (only Harvey Dent died, not necessarily Two-Face) and Catwoman. And by the way, I love the Batrumours.

How about NO gimmicky villian?

How about building upon the story hinted at during the beginning of the Dark Knight where we saw regular citizens taking up the mantle of Batman and stopping the onslaught of crime in their own city?

How about a story where Batman, in his all out crusade to Save Gotham, has to make the ultimate sacrifice, and DIES AT THE END, but through his death, the people of the city he was trying to save are galvanized into cleaning up their own streets and ending the corruption, and in the end, accomplishing the goal of the Batman?
