Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 1:31PM Keanu's 'Cowboy Bebop' Adaptation Getting a Rewrite
"There's a draft of the script, but the writer did such a great job [that] in order to make the movie, you would need half a billion dollars," Keanu Reeves said of his live-action adaptation of the anime classic Cowboy Bebop. If you're not a fan of the form, Bebop is a great introduction because it's ridiculously cinematic. That's what makes it a great opportunity for a live-action rendition, but also, apparently, prohibitively expensive.

Reeves told MTV that writer Peter Craig's screenplay is likely too faithful to the events of the series, and that would make it nearly impossible to film. "So the studio went, 'This movie is fantastic and it would cost half a billion dollars," Keanu quipped, "so he's doing a rewrite."
I completely understand why a lot of people would be standing on the ledge over this one: You may have a great script, but that's not everything when it comes to a movie this visual and detailed. Also, Bebop is pretty effing great the way it is, and because it is so cinematic, you don't absolutely need the live-action equivalent.
However, if you're going to do it - and they're going to do it - don't you at least want them to include everything first, have the studio love the script and just balk at how much movie there is? Isn't it better to include all the good stuff and have the flexibility to take out some of that rather than start with a 90-minute version in mind and pigeonhole yourself into a McMovie?
Reeves doesn't seem to worried about whether or not the movie will get made, and again, if the studio just thinks there's too much good, that's always better than the alternative. So look for more updates on this one in the near future, I guess.

my opinion if you cant do it right dont do it at all. Get a freaking original idea Hollywood. They claim to be artists but artists, but cant get any good ideas that doesnt come from out of hollywood
I agree with Chad...
I mean shiiittt the studio should get the money somehow , that would be best case scenario...
I feel like it will be a great film, I mean especially since Reeves is so gushing about it...
Reeves to me, aint the best of actors, but he is a like-able guy, and this role seems tailor made for him...
Or they could wait a year or two, until production costs would significantly drop do to technological advances. It has happened in the past, and worked out for the best.
If you think about it, most great screenplays, especially adaptations of things that the writer needs to hold true to, tend to take a while to make it to the screen.
I adore the Bebop series, and would love to see a live action adaptation, but I agree with the posters above me, if you have to cut anything from the story line, its gonna ultimately be a disaster. They should just keep it the way it is and give it the attention and money it deserves. Especially since the prospect of a Cowboy Bebop movie would bring forth a lot of fanboys hyping this thing to an epic level.
Honestly, I'm not a big fan of Keanu, but he does indeed look the part. Lets just hope he can play it.
Live action Bebop, it was called "Serenity" hehe
Seriously though, that is basically the same kind of universe it needs to be set in, and Joss had that made for 35Mil. If your effects budget is going over that, then your doing to much CGI, the story while great is not CGI dependent, it needs some, just not a lot.
Unlike say, the live action Evangelion, that will cost a billion in effects because the giant robots are as much a part of the story as the characters themselves.
Keep working ,great job! Suchmaschinenoptimierung
