Johnny Depp Only Returning for One More 'Pirates'?

Good reportage by Katey Rich at Cinema Blend concerning the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The fourth film, On Stranger Tides, has already been announced for 2011, and Johnny Depp made a splashy entrance at Disney's D23 Expo to christen it. However, just weeks after that, chairman Dick Cook was bounced out of the company, leaving Captain Jack sparrow less than enthusiastic about returning to the Black Pearl.

According to the Cinema Blend story, Depp isn't a lock for part four, but even if he stays with the project - either as a man of his word or as a man who really wants a massive paycheck - that would be the last time he appears in the series. Disney wants six movies, because when you've got a property this big, why would you only shoot for one more?

Incidentally, this franchise represents the biggest cash cow at Disney, with the sequels currently taking up two spots on the all-time global box office chart. Collectively, the trio of films have made just under $2.7 billion. before DVD and merchandising.

But if Depp plays along for the fourth movie and doesn't return for the fifth and sixth installments, what in the world will Disney do? Well, there's been talk, and I don't know how serious it is, that Russell Brand would play Jack Sparrow's brother. And that could be fine, but only as a supporting player. Do you really think Brand would be given the keys to the biggest franchise Disney has?

No matter what, the studio was going to need to surround Sparrow with new characters; both Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) are out of the picture, and Geoffrey Rush is the only other returning character that we know of. So if this is in any way accurate, and Depp is going to need some convincing just to sign on for one last hurrah, Disney had better find a good replacement. The only trouble there is, how do you upstage Captain Jack Sparrow?

WOW wtf, Disney want 6 movies what are they outta their minds...

Johnny will definitely not be back for 2 more after this upcoming one...

They should give it up and move to something else, their hindering their creativity because of money making... come on Disney think of something else, I mean you've proved you can make huge hits..

i am pirates number 1 fan and honestly, i would love three more movies, but even 'stranger tides' isn't going to be the same, and it will only get worse after ..
i love johnny depp, and i think if they keep adding on movies, they are going to ruin the reputation that POTC has
