Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 11:51AM Fearless Forecast: 'Final Destination' Wins Again
About a week ago, I wasn't sure whether or not The Final Destination would win one weekend at the box office, and now it looks like it might win two in a row. Much like last weekend, it should be a close race between three films, but I'm going to give the 3-D horror movie the edge.

The new competition that will contend for the prize is Gamer, the only new release in over 2,500 theaters. It has a shot, and would easily win with another 500 houses, but welcome to Labor Day weekend. Until the studios are damn sure this is a great time to release a big film, it won't happen.
One other possibility at number one is Inglourious Basterds, which should enjoy less of a third weekend drop than Final Destination will encounter in its second weekend. Remember, Basterds almost made $20 million last weekend and Labor Day weekend has the extra day, so that could play to this film's advantage. I doubt it will happen, but I think it should be within three million bucks of the eventual winner, whatever that is.
What about Extract, the new Mike Judge comedy? To my surprise, Miramax is only throwing it in about 1,500 theaters, which does not mesh with the amount of advertising I've seen for it. I hope the thought isn't just to play it in major markets, because my hunch is this would do very well in the heartland, based on almost everything Judge has made in the past. It will do OK, but unless it has a Borat-sized crowd at every theater, it's probably rather limited this weekend.
There is also All About Steve, the new Sandra Bullock-Bradley Cooper comedy that's making no friends among the nation's critics. It will likely dredge up some business just because the rest of the top ten is so testosterone-fueled, but even with stars from the year's two biggest comedies, it won't have a lasting effect.
The Top Five:
1 - The Final Destination ($15.5 million)
2 - Inglourious Basterds ($13.5 million)
3 - Gamer ($13 million)
4 - Halloween II ($9 million)
5 - Extract ($7 million)
